Encouragement for Parents with Chronically Ill Children

Posted on Updated on

EncourageWordleCaring for a chronically ill child requires dealing with the school system. I must say that, after six years of Sophia being on homebound, it is still very tricky to handle the school without unleashing a merciless verbal assault on someone; this would come easily to my natural man. It isn’t just the home office but each and every teacher as they are all different people with varying personalities and modes of operation. This year, Sophia’s freshman year, has been the worst dealing with the homebound committee. I have battled against a homebound assigned nurse giving false information leading to the rejection of homebound tutoring as well as false information making things appear one way when they were altogether another. I have had to battle all school year just to attain the proper accommodations for Sophia so as to be able to accomplish her work while in and out of school.

As recently as last week, I had to make a call to both the superintendent as well as a friend on the school board. The homebound board was refusing to grant Sophia homebound hours when she was out three straight weeks. They cited that, because her days were previously excused, they would not accept the newly submitted backdated homebound form so as to get the necessary tutoring to cover those three weeks. When I finally received a call from the head of homebound after she must have received a call from a superior, her response was, “Oh, so all you need are the homebound services? We thought you were requesting her days to be doctor’s excused and they already were.” This was a lie as she knew exactly what I was requesting. Honestly, I cannot for the life of me understand why the school system uses the motto “no child left behind” when they’ve proven time and again they couldn’t care less about my child or her education. There are times over the last 6 years where I have lost my temper in utter frustration listening to them flim-flam their way through the litany of excuses as to why they cannot provide this or that. They love looking good on the surface but, underneath, in my opinion, it’s all about reputation and money.

I say this to say that walking with God and having to confront the school system is challenging at best. As if it isn’t enough having to wrangle with the doctors and their ever changing assessments of what’s going on any given occasion and having to care for my sick child knowing that, in the moment, I can’t do anything to ease her suffering, insult is added to injury having to deal with the school threats of calling truancy if I don’t immediately comply to their system.

I find myself having to regularly and specifically apply God’s Word to my life, my attitude and my overall posture when dealing with the school system at large. I perpetually call myself to accountability so as to not lose my tempter with someone merely delivering a message. I must remind myself they are people too; that the individuals with whom I am dealing are just that – individuals – they are not the system itself. I long to be perfect as Christ is perfect, but there are moments when I lose sight of Holy Spirit, if even for a moment, and have to force myself into obedience to Christ. I surrender each instance to God so I do not become what I hate – a fleshly, worldly, loudmouth mom going off on a tangent. As tempting as it is and as easily as that would come to my natural man, I must resist.

These are some of the lessons within the lessons drawing me closer unto the bosom of God. Choosing to resist temptation at all costs is vital. Though I fail from time to time, God is faithful. I remind myself all things DO work together for good for those who love God and I am in love with God.

James 1:13-16: When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don’t be deceived, my dear bothers and sisters.

No Conformity:

Romans 12:2-3, 14 (NAS): And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and Acceptable and perfect. For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith…Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.

Your mind needs to be transformed because the thoughts of the flesh are corrupt and full of perversion. Your mind, in the natural state, is a cesspool of garbage. God would not instruct you to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” if the mind wasn’t a snare and easy prey for the evil one. The natural reaction of the flesh is always to curse those who harm you. When Holy Spirit is leading, you will be enabled to bless those who curse you with great ease and joy of the Lord. That is not natural, but supernatural!

When you realize that you are seated in heavenly places with Christ, in Christ, you will think His thoughts. You will begin to see clearly as He sees. You will comprehend that God vindicates those who are His own. In knowing this, you will begin to pray for mercy for someone who wrongs you because of the wrath of God that will come against them.

Prayer: Jesus, I ask that You reveal to me in my inner most being what it is to be transformed by the renewing of my mind. I recognize that in being hidden in Christ, I no longer live because my life is swallowed by Your death and Your resurrected life is now my only life. I plead the blood of Jesus over my mind so that, above all, I will allow the mind of Christ to overtake me and allow me to see through Your eyes. May I conduct myself in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, allow You to be You through me, and thusly usher the Kingdom of God into the Earth as You so desire. Selah.

Understanding We’ve Already Died:

Judgment was the result of the sin of one man (Romans 5:15-19). This judgment came to all men. Judgment is upon all flesh whether you are “good people” or bad in the eyes of the world or self. It took only one sin to defile all. But, praise God, since it only took one man to bring condemnation; it took only one act of righteousness through One Man for all to be justified! One act of disobedience equals condemnation for all. One act of pure obedience equals justification to all who receive.

Although we have no choice in being born into condemnation, we must choose to receive justification. In other words, your biological mother could not choose for you at natural birth to be born into righteousness. It is a conscious act that has to come from the individual. You must seek it. It is always available, but still you must accept and receive it of our own free will. Since you were naturally born into condemnation, you now must be born (a separate birth) into supernatural justification and sanctification.

Jesus Christ through His death and resurrection brought into the earthly realm the Blood Covenant; it is a better covenant than the covenant made to Abraham. The awesome thing is that you get the better covenant plus all the promises given to Abraham and his descendants. God has provided more than you can ever think or imagine. You must seek death in order for His promises to be revealed and to be accessible.

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh (Romans 8:2-3, NAS).”

As an aside, I love what this Scripture reads: “God did.” What the Law could not accomplish, what man could not accomplish, God did! He did not leave you without hope in your condemned state. He fulfilled willingly what could not be fulfilled through ordinary man.

Forfeiture of Covenant Protection:

“For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives (Hebrews 9:16-17, NAS).”

When Christ followers walk according to their old fleshly man, they forfeit their covenant protection. Until you realize that you must die to daily rendering the flesh in which you dwell as inactive, covenant promises and protection will elude you while residing on earth. When a person of Christ sins, they reason “God will forgive me.” Truth be told, that person is already forgiven. Forgiveness was sealed for you and I at the cross therefore it is a non-issue. Breaking covenant with God, however, is the issue.

If you’re wondering what’s going wrong in your life in Christ with all your religious conduct and good deeds, maybe “life” isn’t your problem, but death is. Possibly you haven’t died to self and, more than likely, you didn’t realize that was a requirement for covenant activation. I didn’t know this for way too long.

Romans 6:1-11 (NAS): Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase…How shall we who died to sin still live in it? Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life… knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Christ…death no longer is master over Him…consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

We are called to die with Him in His death. The “newness of life” comes only after we crucify our flesh. It occurs to me through the reading of these Scriptures that when someone accepts Christ as Savior through His blood by repenting of the sin nature, they automatically enter into covenant with Yahweh. Unfortunately, many are saved from hell for a long time before they understand that the covenant has not been activated because they have not died to self or even understand how or that they need to. Some never understand. They continue to have all of the same problems and issues they had before salvation because they have no idea who they are in Christ. It is like having a vault full of billions of dollars, yet it is untapped because they do not know it exists or don’t know they have the key in their grasp. So it is with the average believer; they forfeit for lack of knowledge, therefore perish.

Most people never know their covenant promises. Most have zero understanding of how to tap into the limitlessness of God’s power and authority to overcome all obstacles. They never receive revelation or understanding about how to die with Him, that technically their flesh is already buried with Christ, therefore operating within the covenant always eludes them. I was this way until death of the flesh was revealed to me. I say again that there is no covenant activation without death of the flesh. It is the death for which He calls us that ushers freedom from sin.

Covenant Protection:

As I mentioned in the last chapter, I had consigned myself back to Christ in February of 2000, after seven years of angry rebellion. However, too quickly I found myself right back in my fleshly ways resembling that of my rebellion. The result was becoming pregnant by a man that was not my husband. Our relationship was brief because I was quickly convicted (not quickly enough) of my sinful conduct. However, my covenant covering (Holy Spirit) was removed by my own actions of broken covenant.

Although God’s love for me never moved, as a result of my blatant disobedience, His covenant protection was. I was no longer living according to the Spirit but dead flesh. My soul was reactivated in an instant through lustful thinking allowing it to override the voice of Holy Spirit speaking into my spirit. I liken the flesh of mankind as unto a zombie we see in sci-fi movies. Though the person they once were is dead, as a zombie, the body moves at will all the while destroying everything in its wake.

It is of the utmost urgency to know, accept, and understand that one cannot enter into the blood covenant that Christ has freely offered until we choose death to the fleshly nature. Death activates God’s covenant. Disobedience, an act of the flesh, nullifies it.

“For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it. For a covenant is valid only when men are dead, for it is never in force while the one who made it lives (Hebrews 9:16-17, NAS).”

Man’s flesh cannot enter into a covenant because of its cursed condition. Nothing cursed can come into covenant with the pure and holy God. This is why Christ took the flesh of all mankind into the grave with Him –He crucified mankind – so as to allow us free access to the Kingdom of God. As we take up our own cross, we accept death as the only source of entrance into holy covenant. Although we’re technically already dead, it requires our acknowledgment. Because Jesus is the last sacrifice and He shed His own blood, we cannot receive the new blood of Christ until we are purged of the old blood of Adam.

We must, spiritually speaking, give up our old condemned blood (Adam’s) in order to receive the new pure blood (Christ’s). His blood was shed for us so that we may receive it. We are not obligated and we all have the right to keep our own. But, in doing so, we keep death eternal. God says in Deuteronomy that we “choose” life or death, blessing or curse. If we choose to keep our own blood, we choose a curse. We choose life only when we choose His life-giving blood, His covenant of blessing.

It is of the utmost importance to understand “dying to the flesh” so to validate and activate covenant with God. Merely saying the “sinner’s prayer” may grant access to heaven upon death of the physical body, but if the individual does not accept that he or she must die to his or her natural man and the desires thereof while here on earth, that person will never truly enter into covenant with Yahweh as intended. To reiterate, Christ crucified the flesh of all of mankind at His death, therefore it is dead. When we live according to the flesh (death), we give false-life to a dead thing causing much destruction.

Dead Flesh, Living Spirit, part V

The Natural Becomes Unnatural:

I once heard it said at a Chuck Pierce/Dutch Sheets conference, we should all desire and pray that “the natural will become unnatural and the supernatural of God become natural.” Translation: you should be so in tune with and led by Holy Spirit that acting worldly (fleshly) becomes unnatural, and operating supernaturally, like God, becomes everyday life.

Let’s recall Galatians 5:16-21. First, it reads, “the desire of the flesh,” not “desires” plural. The flesh has one ultimate goal, one single desire: to do everything contrary to God and holiness. Satan destroys man by the lures of this world; it is the fleshly nature that is drawn by the devil. This whole battle mankind experiences is Satan against God. Man is merely a pawn Satan utilizes to defeat God. You know that ultimately God wins, but, Satan is overcome by God through man. You are crucial in this war!

Each one of us are guilty of at least one sin led by fleshly desire, even the nicest, kindest, most moral person. Just because a person does nice things does not mean they are led by Holy Spirit. Scads of “moral” people are without Christ and sentenced to hell. When Holy Spirit is in control, all attributes of Holy Spirit, the entire nature of God, will come from you: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, compassion, mercy, humility, mercy and compassion. These describe the very essence and nature of God. When God has been allowed to consume you, this is what the world will witness and they will be drawn to God in you us, not you the person.

When you give all over to Christ, automatically the desire of the flesh will begin to fall away; not that it is necessarily easy as one thinks of easy, but Holy Spirit will override the fleshly desire. Only one can be in control – Holy Spirit or the flesh. By inserting the Light within and then allowing Holy Spirit to commune with your spirit, He begins to show you every wicked way in you, whether on the surface or buried deeply within. In doing so, you may confess and repent and be made whole. No one knows what to confess until it is revealed. The majority of Christians flounder in their faith because they have no idea of the root of their problem in life. You do not know where to begin the cleaning unless you allow Him to reveal it.

The Human Race:

The human race as a whole is a disaster. Each generation is worse than the last. Remember the law of increase instituted by God back in the Garden? That law is still in motion. Because of the curse sentenced to man, the law works against you instead of for you. You need to buckle down, stop running around doing, doing, doing all the time and begin to focus on developing a truly personal relationship with God.

After the cleansing, blessings that have been hindered from your grasp and your family for generations can now begin to flow into and through you. How marvelous is God’s unfailing compassion and mercy!

Romans 8:10-13: If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.  So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Dead Flesh, Living Spirit, part IV

WWGT cover front

True Circumcision:

Philippians 3:3 (NAS): for we are the true circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh

Ephesians 2:3 (NAS): Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.

Your heart becomes circumcised when you die to yourself and live to Christ. Put no confidence in the flesh – it’s dead by definition! It is condemned and can breed only corruption – no exemptions. There is no exclusive club compiled of people who are born into righteousness. We are all born into the nature of the earth with our minds corrupt from birth.

Remember, you are born knowing evil, not good. You are born into the sin nature of Satan. There is no good person good enough that God would look upon them and say, “Okay, you, you and you are exempt from dying to the flesh because I like your style!”  Jesus said, “Why do you call me good? There is NO ONE GOOD but God.” (Matthew 19:16; Romans 7:18). True circumcision is spiritual and it is cutting out that which defiled you and your relationship with God – the nature of the fleshly man.

Baptized into His Death:

Galatians 2:20 (NAS): I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

This is a very specific Scripture that, if we had no other, we see that the whole of mankind entered into death with Christ at the time of His physical death. This being so, “dying to the flesh” is actually not a matter of killing something alive but rather putting to death and nullifying the works of a dead thing. A life without Christ isn’t life at all – it is death no matter how alive one may appear. Once Adam and Eve were condemned to death, though they appeared alive, death was already at hand.

Romans 6:1-11 (NAS): … baptized into His death…so we too might walk in newness of life…so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

“He who has died is freed from sin!” The only way for us to be freed from sin is to die, as I’ve covered extensively. This is not a physical dying, but spiritual. The text is clear and precise in its direction. When we choose to die with Christ, we are no longer allowed to give in to our own emotions, desires or passions (soulish ways) though you still feel what you feel. Now, because the very Spirit of Jesus Christ is in operation through you, He does your thinking, and gives you His desire.

This does not mean you become stupid excluding discernment and wisdom from daily life; on the contrary. It does mean that you consult Him before any action is taken on any level. When you choose self-discipline, He begins to work wisdom and discernment in you. The more you mature and grow in His love, the more natural the supernatural becomes – there is no longer separation between you and God, His will vs. your will – His will is your will.
