Chapter 9: Why Worry, part I
Worry is the polar opposite of faith. I am always baffled at the ongoing worry, stress and fretting among the so-called seasoned men and women of God. They read, and read, and read the Word yet they walk away every time with just as much fear as when they sat to read. Worry weakens faith; or rather, worry is the evidence faith is not present.
How might one accurately say, “I trust the Lord with all my heart, soul, mind and strength” or better yet, “I believe the whole Word of God” but can’t have enough faith for Him to provide their needs. Worry makes the one who claims to be a follower of Christ look hypocritical to the spectators of the world around them. What hypocrites we are when we proclaim faith that Christ is real yet don’t believe Him for any sort of miracle. In my estimation, there are very few among the multitudes who call themselves “Christians” who actually believe in the God they proclaim.
It’s incredibly easy to praise God and give Him all the glory when things are going really well, but throw in a little wind that lasts longer than 30 minutes and panic ensues. Jesus said to His closest comrades, “Why are you afraid, you men of little faith?” Is He saying the same to you? If He is, it isn’t to condemn or guilt you, but to bring you to reconciliation that He is who He says He is and has given His church power over the enemy. He allows the struggles of life to first reveal how little faith we possess and, secondly, to produce much needed faith. Thirdly, in the trials and strengthening of our faith, He is able to glorify Himself when He presents Himself sovereign when all else fails.
Worry is the catalyst for Satan to run rampant in your life. Worry is the adversary to faith. Anxieties, fears, and distresses reveal where we are not with God. They are the factual expression of how we really feel about God. They are of the flesh, not the Spirit. Instead of condemning yourself when this happens, encourage yourself in the Lord so as to usher in much needed faith. Beating yourself up only further exacerbates your dilemma. Learn to discipline yourself so as to refresh your memory of how God has moved on your behalf in the past. Your situation is temporal but God is forever and ever. E.g. when you’re in fear, remind yourself, “Christ is my strength and my salvation. There is none I shall fear. He is my rock and my stronghold.”
It is never God’s desire or mission to shame you but to encourage and persuade you to trust Him. Nothing is for nothing and everything is for something. Find out God’s “something” in your trials. If you ask with a genuine heart so as to discover, He will reveal Himself to you in the most personal way. Take the time to seek that you may find your way through the wilderness. God is sovereign and “shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19).”
The “according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” is revealing. Again, the “shall supply” is not that He must suddenly create something for you, but that, because of what is already created in the riches of Christ, He will get it to you in perfect timing. What you need, He’s already produced in the heavenly realm; Heaven is the storeroom for what you need ushered down to Earth. Walk according to faith and you’ll see things work for good for those who love Him. It may not manifest physically the way you would choose, but His ways are infinitely supreme to that which we can think or imagine.
“Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life (Revelation 2:10, NAS).”
Tangible and Intangible:
“in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience (Ephesians 2:2, NAS).”
Behind every tangible object there is something intangible; demonic forces set by Satan’s kingdom. Watchman Nee refers to the intangible as the world, meaning the spirit world of Satan. I often hear people say, “Oh, don’t look for a demon behind every bush!” I am here to tell you that there is a demon behind every bush, every door, every tangible thing. Satan is the prince of the air; the air, spiritually speaking, is infiltrated with demonic spirits.
The world of Satan is demonic in nature and he runs this Earth. If something is not Holy Spirit controlled, it is controlled by Satan and his legion of fallen angels. The Body of Christ sorely needs to grasp this and then learn how to protect herself from the wiles of the enemy. She is to take back the earth!
If there is anything that you hold tightly physically, mentally or emotionally, it is controlling you. If it is, then God is not. Again, if you are still operating in the flesh, you allow your mind to be flooded with things of the flesh. However, if you are completely led by Holy Spirit, your mind will be flooded with the thoughts of Christ Jesus and it will be a pleasure. Then, whenever something of the flesh tries to come in, and it will try, you will immediately be able and willing to recognize it, reject it, and pull it down into the obedience of Christ as we are instructed according to II Corinthians 10:5.
All who are led by the Spirit will be noticeable in this world, for the world is set against God. Those whose lives are Christ alone need to rise out of complacency. The Bride of Christ, as she is now, just kind of strolls along through life not really concerned with knowing what is of God and what is of Satan; what is of the Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. She seems to be in a comatose state.
If you do not know if you are led by the Spirit, let me help – you are not! You must make an executive decision concerning your fleshly desires to die to them. This is taking up the authority Christ gave you over your own person. Then, and only then, will you be free to be led by Holy Spirit.

Understanding We’ve Already Died:
Judgment was the result of the sin of one man (Romans 5:15-19). This judgment came to all men. Judgment is upon all flesh whether you are “good people” or bad in the eyes of the world or self. It took only one sin to defile all. But, praise God, since it only took one man to bring condemnation; it took only one act of righteousness through One Man for all to be justified! One act of disobedience equals condemnation for all. One act of pure obedience equals justification to all who receive.
Although we have no choice in being born into condemnation, we must choose to receive justification. In other words, your biological mother could not choose for you at natural birth to be born into righteousness. It is a conscious act that has to come from the individual. You must seek it. It is always available, but still you must accept and receive it of our own free will. Since you were naturally born into condemnation, you now must be born (a separate birth) into supernatural justification and sanctification.
Jesus Christ through His death and resurrection brought into the earthly realm the Blood Covenant; it is a better covenant than the covenant made to Abraham. The awesome thing is that you get the better covenant plus all the promises given to Abraham and his descendants. God has provided more than you can ever think or imagine. You must seek death in order for His promises to be revealed and to be accessible.
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh (Romans 8:2-3, NAS).”
As an aside, I love what this Scripture reads: “God did.” What the Law could not accomplish, what man could not accomplish, God did! He did not leave you without hope in your condemned state. He fulfilled willingly what could not be fulfilled through ordinary man.

The Natural Becomes Unnatural:
I once heard it said at a Chuck Pierce/Dutch Sheets conference, we should all desire and pray that “the natural will become unnatural and the supernatural of God become natural.” Translation: you should be so in tune with and led by Holy Spirit that acting worldly (fleshly) becomes unnatural, and operating supernaturally, like God, becomes everyday life.
Let’s recall Galatians 5:16-21. First, it reads, “the desire of the flesh,” not “desires” plural. The flesh has one ultimate goal, one single desire: to do everything contrary to God and holiness. Satan destroys man by the lures of this world; it is the fleshly nature that is drawn by the devil. This whole battle mankind experiences is Satan against God. Man is merely a pawn Satan utilizes to defeat God. You know that ultimately God wins, but, Satan is overcome by God through man. You are crucial in this war!
Each one of us are guilty of at least one sin led by fleshly desire, even the nicest, kindest, most moral person. Just because a person does nice things does not mean they are led by Holy Spirit. Scads of “moral” people are without Christ and sentenced to hell. When Holy Spirit is in control, all attributes of Holy Spirit, the entire nature of God, will come from you: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, compassion, mercy, humility, mercy and compassion. These describe the very essence and nature of God. When God has been allowed to consume you, this is what the world will witness and they will be drawn to God in you us, not you the person.
When you give all over to Christ, automatically the desire of the flesh will begin to fall away; not that it is necessarily easy as one thinks of easy, but Holy Spirit will override the fleshly desire. Only one can be in control – Holy Spirit or the flesh. By inserting the Light within and then allowing Holy Spirit to commune with your spirit, He begins to show you every wicked way in you, whether on the surface or buried deeply within. In doing so, you may confess and repent and be made whole. No one knows what to confess until it is revealed. The majority of Christians flounder in their faith because they have no idea of the root of their problem in life. You do not know where to begin the cleaning unless you allow Him to reveal it.
The Human Race:
The human race as a whole is a disaster. Each generation is worse than the last. Remember the law of increase instituted by God back in the Garden? That law is still in motion. Because of the curse sentenced to man, the law works against you instead of for you. You need to buckle down, stop running around doing, doing, doing all the time and begin to focus on developing a truly personal relationship with God.
After the cleansing, blessings that have been hindered from your grasp and your family for generations can now begin to flow into and through you. How marvelous is God’s unfailing compassion and mercy!
Romans 8:10-13: If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh—for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

Abstinence from the Flesh:
“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone wished to come after Me, he must deny himself…(Matthew 16:24-25, NAS).’”
I Thessalonians 4:3-8 (NAS): For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God; and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you.
We in our flesh do not have the capacity to abstain from anything of the world for very long, just like how I was when I first came back to Christ. Your flesh is weak. Once you choose through Holy Spirit that you no longer want your flesh to rule, you can then resign your flesh to death so that you may receive Holy Spirit anointing; that He may overtake your very way of thinking and operation in day to day life.
His light, The Light, is now in you and He separates (discerns) good from evil for and through you. His completed work at the cross is active through you. His light reveals the mess that is inside you just as He revealed of the condition of the earth in Genesis 1:2 – now deep cleansing can begin. Cleansing is for the purpose of making room for Him to live. Once clean, you must daily keep yourself clean.
The natural mind focuses on the things of the flesh, aka lustful passion. Once Holy Spirit is able to move in and take over, then you can begin to think with the mind of Christ, which is God’s desire. Because Christ crucified sinful flesh of all mankind, it is crucified permanently from God’s perspective. However, we are instructed to daily crucify the flesh consigning it to the death Christ enacted. You must consciously, every day, pray that He show you how to allow His life to overrule the old man. Then you can transition from praying and asking to declaring and decreeing His promises!
Because you still live in this earthen vessel, you must constantly pull down the natural ways. If the prophet Elijah and King David could find themselves in the situations they did after many years led by Holy Spirit, who are you or I to think we can allow our flesh to override the Spirit, even for a moment, and be blessed? You cannot neglect Holy Spirit for a millisecond. You cannot be carnal in any form and think it is okay with God just because He is the God of love. Your foolishness of lack of obedience is wasting God’s precious time. Align every moment of every hour so that you will be effective for God’s Kingdom expansion.

What Went Wrong?
“For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please (Galatians 5:17, NAS).”
“What happened?” you may ask and the answer is simple. I was led by my mind (that said “go ahead, this once won’t matter. You deserve some fun”), my will (which didn’t care one wit about God’s Word), and my emotions (telling me how good it would feel physically). There in play was my soul: mind, will and emotions I’ve already touched on throughout the chapters. Remember, this is what happened to Adam. At one point, I still did not understand the strategy of war or how to battle. I didn’t understand the Kingdom of God, how to fight the soul, or how Satan operated in me through my lack of knowledge of my identity in Christ.
The flesh is at enmity with the spirit. The natural man’s fleshly desire (death) wanted what it wanted. My spirit (life) wanted to please God but was overridden by my soul. Any enemy, natural or spiritual, will always overtake you if you don’t know who they are and how they operate. This is why we must learn how to die to everything that is not from Holy Spirit leading. The enemy works through any means possible to trick and trip you.
To recap the first few chapters, the only way to escape the curse of eternal death is to die to the flesh while living in a mortal temple. The only way to live again is to be born a second time into the Spirit of the Living God. When a follower of The Way is saved they are called out of the earthly nature and brought into the spiritual nature of God. Not only did Jesus literally give up His physical flesh on the cross, He denied or died to His flesh while living on the earth.
Surely He, before Satan came against Him on the mountain, was tempted while growing up with all the temptation of a normal human being; yet, He never sinned. The Word says so. Why is there so little understanding? This act of sinlessness throughout Jesus’ life shows you how to die to the flesh while living in this earthen vessel. He never took into consideration Himself or His own desires of the flesh. He denied Himself the pleasures of this world. He gave no leeway to the flesh though temptation was ever present.
To die to the flesh is to be selfless or no self involvement. No part of you is involved in any decision making; only Holy Spirit leading is allowed. You no longer take the old, dead earthly nature and it’s wants into consideration. As I have already stated, the absolute purpose of the physical body is to bring honor and glory to Yahweh, always and in everything. Your relationship is not a part time job, it’s your life.
This does not mean you cannot golf, fish, watch some television, read the paper, wear make-up or jewelry, work a job, etc. It does, however, mean that God is to be supreme ruler over all these things and you are not to allow anything to stand in the way of your Kingdom destiny. He wants you to enjoy the things of this earth as long as they do not interfere with His kingdom purpose. Everything must be in balance – something for which the world in unfamiliar. God’s perspective is the only perspective you are to recognize as valid.
